Torrijos Maintains Pace In Panama

(CPOD) Sept. 17, 2003 - Martín Torrijos remains on track to become the next president of Panama, according to a poll by Dichter & Neira published in La Prensa. 42.5 per cent of respondents say they will vote for Torrijos, certain nominee for the Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD).

The leading presidential hopeful finished second to current head of state Mireya Moscoso in the 1999 election, and is the son of army general Omar Torrijos, who ruled the country from 1968 to 1981.

Guillermo Endara of the Solidarity Party (PS), who was president from 1989 to 1994, is second in vote intention with 28.2 per cent. José Miguel Alemán is the top hopeful for the ruling Arnulfist Party (PA) with 9.6 per cent, followed by Ricardo Martinelli of the Democratic Change Party (PCD). The presidential election is scheduled for May 2, 2004.
