Torrijos Keeps Lead In Panama

(CPOD) Jul. 19, 2003 - Martín Torrijos continues to be the first choice to be the next president of Panama, according to a poll by Dichter & Neira published in La Nación. 41.7 per cent of respondents say they will vote for Torrijos, certain nominee for the Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD).

The leading presidential hopeful finished second to current president Mireya Moscoso in the 1999 election, and is the son of Omar Torrijos, who ruled the country from 1968 to 1981.

Guillermo Endara of the Solidarity Party (PS), who was president from 1989 to 1994, is second in vote intention with 26 per cent. José Miguel Alemán is the top hopeful for the ruling Arnulfist Party (PA) with 10.7 per cent. Ricardo Martinelli of the Democratic Change Party (PCD) garners the support of two per cent of respondents.

The election is scheduled for May 2, 2004.
