Torrijos Early Leader In Panama Presidential Race
(CPOD) May 21, 2003 - Martín Torrijos is the first choice for Panamanians a year prior to the next presidential election, according to a poll by Dichter & Neira published in La Prensa. 44.5 per cent of respondents say they will vote for Torrijos, certain nominee for the Revolutionary Democratic Party(PRD).
The leading presidential hopeful finished second to current president Mireya Moscoso in the 1999 election, and is the son Omar Torrijos, an army general who ruled the country from 1968 to 1981.
Guillermo Endara, who was president from 1989 to 1994, is second in vote intention with 25.4 per cent. Endara recently joined the Solidarity Party (PS) to boost his presidential bid.
Three hopefuls from the ruling Arnulfist Party (PA)—José Miguel Alemán, Marco Ameglio and Víctor Juliao—have significantly less support, along with Ricardo Martinelli of the Democratic Change Party (PCD).
Approval for Moscoso remains low, as 34.3 per cent of respondents rate her performance as good or very good.
