Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
Tories Have 11-Point Advantage in Canada
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Support for the Conservative party increased this month in Canada, according to a poll by Ipsos-Reid released by CanWest Global. 40 per cent of respondents would vote for the Tories in the next federal election.
The Liberal party is second with 29 per cent, followed by the New Democratic Party (NDP) with 14 per cent, the Bloc Québécois with nine per cent, and the Green party with seven per cent. Support for the Tories increased by four points in a week, while backing for the Grits fell by five points.
Canadians renewed the House of Commons in January 2006. The Conservative party—led by Stephen Harper—received 36.3 per cent of the vote, and secured 124 seats in the 308-member lower house. Harper leads a minority administration after more than 12 years of government by the Liberal party. In December 2006, former environment minister Stéphane Dion became the new leader of the Liberals.
On Mar. 22, Harper called on the House of Commons to approve his environmental initiatives, declaring, "Inaction on the environment heralds consequences that are beyond contemplation. But action on the environment promises opportunities of limitless potential."
Liberal environment critic David McGuinty questioned the government's credibility on the environment, declaring, "The minister (John Baird) has just delivered to Canadian parliamentarians a completely different stand on a critical climate change issue than the one he provided to G-8 environment ministers just last week."
