(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Canada's main federal parties are virtually even, according to a poll by Ipsos-Reid released by CanWest Global. 32 per cent of respondents would vote for the governing Conservative party in the next federal election, while 31 per cent would support the Liberal party.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) is third with 16 per cent, followed by the Bloc Québécois with 10 per cent, and the Green party with nine per cent. Support for the Tories fell by two points since late May, while backing for the Grits remained stable.

Canadians renewed the House of Commons in January 2006. The Conservative party—led by Stephen Harper—received 36.3 per cent of the vote, and secured 124 seats in the 308-member lower house. Harper leads a minority administration after more than 12 years of government by the Liberal party. In December 2006, former environment minister Stéphane Dion became the new leader of the Liberals.

On Jun. 19, NDP lawmaker Dawn Black presented the party's plan to address Canada's military commitment in Afghanistan. Black criticized the Liberal proposal, saying, "Our report explains how the Liberals got us into Afghanistan, the nature of the international community's involvement, the challenges to peace, and what it will take to stabilize the country. (...) You cannot expect Canadians to take seriously the Liberal's hastily cobbled-together report that even contains spelling mistakes."
