Toledo’s Rating Drops In Peru

April 10, 2003

(CPOD) Apr. 10, 2003 - Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo is losing public support, according to a poll by CPIM. 74.7 per cent of respondents disapprove of his administration so far.

Toledo was elected in June 2001, defeating Alan Garcia in a run-off. Economic pressures and failure to deliver on campaign promises are cited as the causes for Toledo's low numbers. He recently expressed interest in decentralizing Peru's government, mainly housed in the capital of Lima.

Corruption has been the main focus for Toledo. The third public trial against former intelligence agency head Vladimiro Montesinos is underway. Montesinos is charged with influence peddling, after demanding the firing of a journalist in exchange for help in two court cases. Peruvians also await a decision regarding former head of state Alberto Fujimori, currently exiled in Japan. Interpol recently issued a warrant for his arrest.

In a welcome development, the Peruvian Congress voted to reinstate the Senate, ten years after Fujimori shut it down in what was later nicknamed a "self coup."
