Three-in-Four Peruvians Disappointed with García

August 24, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Peruvians are clearly disappointed with the performance of Alan García, according to a poll by Ipsos, Apoyo, Opinión y Mercado published in El Comercio. Only 22 per cent of respondents approve of the president’s work, down four points since July.

In June 2006, García—a member of the American Revolutionary People’s Alliance (APRA)—won Peru’s presidential election in a run-off against nationalist Ollanta Humala of the Union for Peru (UP). In July, García officially took over as president. He had previously served as Peru’s head of state from 1985 to 1990, when he oversaw a major economic crisis.

Since Aug. 9, indigenous groups in Peru’s Amazonian region have staged several protests against a government measure that will make it easier to sell their land. Mining companies are usually looking to purchase land in the resource-rich region.

On Aug. 18, García declared a state of emergency in the provinces of Amazonas, Loreto and Cuzco, prohibiting public gatherings and free transit within the regions. The measure will be in effect for 30 days. Peruvian prime minister Jorge del Castillo said that the government was safeguarding "the rights of the great majority of Peruvians" with this decision.
