Three-in-Four of Peruvians Condemn García

September 20, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The vast majority of people in Peru are disappointed with the government of Alan García, according to a poll by Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. 75 per cent of respondents disapprove of the president’s performance, up 12 points since June.

In June 2006, García—a member of the American Revolutionary People’s Alliance (APRA)—won Peru’s presidential election in a run-off against nationalist Ollanta Humala of the Union for Peru (UP). In July, García officially took over as president. He had previously served as Peru’s head of state from 1985 to 1990, when he oversaw a major economic crisis.

On Sept. 15, García referred to his drop in popular support, saying, "I know Peru from so many years and I know its emotional cycles and its way of thinking. Tell me about it."
