Thompson, Hillary Lead in North Carolina
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More Republican Party supporters in North Carolina want Fred Thompson as their United States presidential nominee in 2008, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling. 30 per cent of GOP voters in the Tar Heel State would back the actor and former Tennessee senator in a primary, up four points since August.
Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is second with 16 per cent, followed by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 13 per cent, and Arizona senator John McCain with seven per cent.
In the sample of Democratic Party supporters, New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is first with 30 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 28 per cent, and Illinois senator Barack Obama with 21 per cent.
The Democratic presidential primary in North Carolina is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 5. The Republican contest in the Tar Heel State is expected to take place on May 6.
In 2004, Edwards won the Democratic North Carolina caucus with 52 per cent of the vote, followed by Massachusetts senator John Kerry with 27 per cent, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich with 12 per cent, former Vermont governor Howard Dean with six per cent, and reverend Al Sharpton with three per cent.
Incumbent president George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next U.S. presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
