Swede Euro Vote Too Close To Call

September 05, 2003

(CPOD) Sept. 5, 2003 - A narrow gap separates the two conflicting camps in the Swedish currency plebiscite, according to a poll by Demoskop. 44 per cent of respondents want to keep the Krona, a five per cent lead over the pro-Euro camp.

Sweden will hold a referendum on Sept. 14, to decide whether or not to adopt the Euro, which has been used in 12 of the 15 European Union (EU) countries since Jan. 1, 2002. Sweden, Denmark and Great Britain are the only current EU members that have not adopted the currency.

Prime minister Goeran Persson, who is heading the "Yes" side, advised that if the referendum fails, voters would not get a chance to vote on the issue again before 2010.
