(CPOD) Jul. 6, 2004 - Canadians are more welcoming to the concept of wedlock for gay and lesbian partners, according to a poll by Environics Research Group. 57 per cent of respondents are in favour of allowing gays and lesbians to get married, while 38 per cent disagree.
Support for marriage between homosexual partners has increased by nine per cent since September 2003, while opposition has dropped by the same margin.
Last year, the Canadian provinces of Ontario and British Columbia allowed homosexual marriage after separate court rulings.
On Jun. 28, Canadian voters renewed the House of Commons. Current prime minister Paul Martin of the Liberal party will head a minority government.
