(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Mexican president Felipe Calderón maintains a high level of public support, according to a poll by Reforma. 65 per cent of respondents approve of the head of state’s performance, unchanged since May.

Mexican voters chose their new president in July 2006. Official results placed Calderón of the National Action Party (PAN) as the winner with 36.68 per cent of all cast ballots. Calderón—a former energy secretary—took over as Mexico’s head of state in December.

During his campaign, Calderón vowed to combat illicit drug trafficking and drug-related crime, as well as to boost Mexico’s economy.

On Sept. 1, during his State of the Country address, Calderón criticized American immigration policies and vowed to protect the rights of Mexicans living in the United States, saying, "Mexico does not end at its borders. (...) We strongly protest the unilateral measures taken by the U.S. Congress and government that have only persecuted and exacerbated the mistreatment of Mexican undocumented workers. The insensitivity toward those who support the U.S. economy and society has only served as an impetus to reinforce the battle (...) for their rights."
