Spaniards Back Equality For Same-Sex Couples
(CPOD) Jul. 23, 2004 - Many adults in Spain support equality for same-sex partners, according to a poll by CIS. 67.7 per cent of respondents think stable homosexual couples should have the same rights and obligations as heterosexual couples.
In March, the outgoing Popular Party (PP) administration of José María Aznar allowed for the recognition of civil unions. Earlier this month, the new Spanish government headed by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of the Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE) passed a preliminary resolution to explore a possible legalization of same-sex marriage.
During the dictatorship of Francisco Franco from 1939 to 1975, homosexuality was considered a criminal offence in Spain. Belgium and the Netherlands are currently the only European nations that allow wedlock for same-sex partners.
