South Africans Reject Legalizing Prostitution
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - A large majority of people in three South African cities is against a proposal to decriminalize the sex trade, according to a poll by African Response. 79 per cent of respondents oppose allowing prostitution ahead of the 2010 World Cup.
In March, South African police commissioner Jackie Selebi urged the National Assembly to consider options on prostitution and alcohol consumption during the tournament, saying, "I want you to apply your minds to my dilemma of what to do with the thousands of soccer hooligans expected to imbibe in public spaces and those who would feel the urge to try out other more exotic pastimes both currently illegal in South Africa."
On Jun. 13, South African president Thabo Mbeki discussed the preparations for the World Cup, saying, "I have no doubt that our local organizing committee, government at all levels and everybody concerned will do the necessary work to guarantee that we host a better tournament in 2010 than the excellent 2006 German World Cup."
Earlier this month, a report from Statistics South Africa revealed that AIDS-related illnesses were among the major causes of death in the country during 2005. Medical experts have suggested that the high incidence of tuberculosis, influenza and pneumonia in South Africa is closely linked to HIV/AIDS.
