Socialists First, Popular Party Second In Spain

(Angus Reid Global Scan) - The Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE) is the top political organization in Spain, according to a poll by CIS. 42.1 per cent of respondents would vote for the PSOE in the next general election.

The PSOE's José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was sworn in as president of the government on Apr. 19, following his party's victory in the Mar. 14 general election.

The Popular Party (PP) is second with 36.1 per cent, followed by United Left (IU), Catalonia's Convergence and Union (CiU), the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV).

Zapatero's government has proposed the legalization of same-sex marriage and a reduction to the amount of religious instruction in public schools. The president also ordered the return of Spain's 1,420 soldiers from Iraq hours after naming his cabinet.

In 2003, then-president José María Aznar of the PP was a key ally in the Iraq coalition effort. Eleven Spaniards died in the war.
