(CPOD) Apr. 17, 2003 - Former president Carlos Menem hangs on to a slim lead in the upcoming election in Argentina, according to a poll by Ipsos Mora y Araujo published in La Nación. 18.3 per cent of respondents would support Menem in the election. Santa Cruz governor Néstor Kirchner and Ricardo López Murphy are virtually tied for second. Former interim president Adolfo Rodríguez Saá and left-wing candidate Elisa Carrió round up the top five.

The last few days have offered many statements and developments. Menem recently got his name back in the social columns, after announcing that his wife, Chilean model Cecilia Bolocco, is expecting a child. Kirchner said that if elected he would retain current economy minister Roberto Lavagna. Carrió raised controversy with her bold remarks on the United States, stating that a Menem victory would turn Argentina into "George W. Bush's beach house".

The race seems headed for the first run-off in the country's history. If no candidate gets more than 45 per cent of all votes on Apr. 27—or reaches a percentage between 40 and 45 per cent with a 10 per cent lead over the closest competitor—a vote between the two leading candidates would take place on May 18.
