Slight Drop For Lula In Brazil
(CPOD) Jul. 5, 2003 - Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's approval rating went through its first setback, according to a poll by Ibope. 43 per cent of respondents in Brazil say the president's administration has been "good" or "very good," an eight per cent drop since March.
Combating hunger and generating jobs have been the main priorities for the president. Brazil's unemployment rate climbed to 12.8 per cent in May. 60 per cent of Brazilians live below the poverty line.
Lula faced his first major crisis this week, as the country's Landless Workers Movement (MST) organized a standoff a few miles from the presidential palace. Lula held an emergency meeting in an effort to stop future disputes between landowners and peasants.
