- Many adults in the United States believe more nuclear reactors would be beneficial for their country, according to a poll by Bloomberg and the Los Angeles Times. 61 per cent of respondents support the increased use of nuclear power as a source of energy in order to prevent global warming.

The term global warming refers to an increase of the Earth's average temperature. Some theories say that climate change might be the result of human-generated carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

More than 100 nuclear reactors supply close to 20 per cent of the electricity used in the U.S. In May 2005, U.S. president George W. Bush pushed for the construction of new reactors, saying, "America has not ordered a nuclear power plant since the 1970s. France, by contrast, has built 58 plants in the same period. And today, France gets more than 78 percent of its electricity from nuclear power. In order to make sure you get electricity at reasonable prices, and in order to make sure our air remains clean, it is time for us to start building some nuclear power plants in America."

Last May, Bush dismissed concerns about possible setbacks, saying, "Nuclear power is safe. It is safe because of advances in science and engineering and plant design. It is safe because the workers and managers of our nuclear power plants are incredibly skilled people who know what they're doing."
