Sarkozy’s Popularity Plummets in France

January 23, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - French president Nicolas Sarkozy has fewer admirers than last year, according to a poll by BVA published in L’Express. 45 per cent of respondents have a good opinion of Sarkozy, down six points since last month.

In May 2007, Sarkozy, a centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) candidate and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister. 43 per cent of respondents have a positive opinion of Fillon.

On Jan. 18, Sarkozy called for a combined effort in order to tackle "dangerous" problems in the world’s economic system, adding, "The time has come for the main players, old and new, for a strong and discreet cooperation to seriously tackle the two big weaknesses of the current international system. (…) The relation between the main currencies where the persistent imbalance is dangerous for everyone and the absence of transparency and sufficiently restrictive rules for funds and financial products, which could be, in case of accident, a serious threat for the world."
