Sarkozy, Villepin Would Fare Well in French Election
(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Many adults in France are willing to support interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy in the next presidential election, according to a poll by CSA published in Marianne. At least 54 per cent of respondents would vote for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) leader in head-to-head contests against five Socialist politicians.
Sarkozy holds an eight per cent lead over former presidential candidate and prime minister Lionel Jospin, an 18 per cent advantage over Socialist Party (PS) chairman François Hollande, a 20 per cent lead over former prime minister Laurent Fabius, a 24 per cent advantage over former finance minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and a 34 per cent lead over former Socialist leader Henri Emmanuelli. In November, the 49-year-old Sarkozy was elected president of the UMP.
Current prime minister Dominique de Villepin is tied with Jospin. The 51-year-old Villepin holds a 12 per cent advantage over Strauss-Kahn, a 14 per cent lead over Fabius, a 20 per cent advantage over Hollande, and a 34 per cent lead over Emmanuelli.
Jacques Chirac won the presidential election as a UMP candidate in 1995, and was re-elected in a run-off over Jean-Marie Le Pen in May 2002. The next presidential ballot in France is tentatively scheduled for April 2007.
