Sarkozy Stays Above 60% Mark in France

October 21, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - French president Nicolas Sarkozy maintains a positive rating in France, according to two recent public opinion polls. In a survey by Ipsos published in Le Point, 63 per cent of respondents have a favourable opinion of Sarkozy, and 54 per cent feel the same way about French prime minister François Fillon.

In a study by LH2 published in Libération, 61 per cent of respondents have a positive opinion of Sarkozy’s performance, and 51 per cent are satisfied with their prime minister.

In May, Sarkozy, a centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) candidate and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister.

A new European Union (EU) treaty signed in Lisbon on Oct. 19 seeks to create the figure of a European president. Sarkozy praised former British prime minister Tony Blair—who has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the position—saying, "I saw Tony Blair the night before last and he is a remarkable man, the most pro-European of all the British. I don’t know what his intentions are. But that one could think of him as a possibility is quite a smart move."
