Sarkozy Fails to Recapture Popularity in France

June 20, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Most people in France continue to disapprove of Nicolas Sarkozy, according to a poll by BVA published in L’Express. 59 per cent of respondents have a negative opinion of their president, down one point since May.

In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed François Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister. 44 per cent of respondents have a positive opinion of Fillon’s performance, up two points in a month.

On Jun. 15, Fillon refused calls to lower oil prices, saying, "To encourage fuel consumption would be a historical misstep. It would prolong the illusion pending the next hike. I refuse to take this short-term approach."
