Saca’s Ratings Remain Stable in El Salvador
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - People in El Salvador appear satisfied with Antonio Saca, according to a poll by LPG Datos published in La Prensa Gráfica. The popularity rating of the Salvadoran president stands at 6.0 points out of 10, practically unchanged since last November.
Saca—a media businessman—was elected in March 2004 as the candidate for the ruling conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), garnering 57.73 per cent of the vote. ARENA candidates have won the last four presidential elections in the Central American country. Saca is ineligible for a consecutive term in office.
On Aug. 23, Salvadoran national police chief Francisco Rovira stepped down following media reports that two of his closest aides—José Pérez Aguillón and José Aquino—had links to drug traffickers and were corrupt. Saca made the announcement, saying, "This morning, (Rovira) told me he wanted an open and transparent investigation and that’s why I accepted his resignation."
The next legislative election is scheduled for Jan. 18, 2009, with a presidential ballot following on Mar. 15.
