Russians Want Putin To Serve Again

(CPOD) Oct. 12, 2003 - Vladimir Putin maintains an overwhelming lead in the 2004 Russian presidential race, according to a poll by the Public Opinion Foundation. 51 per cent of respondents would vote for the current president.

Putin's closest competitor is Gennady Zyuganov --leader of the Russian Communist Party-- with 12 per cent. The remaining candidates, including controversial Liberal leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, are below five per cent.

Putin-backed candidates recently won local elections in St. Petersburg and Chechnya, but the president has faced criticism for his push to draft a new election law, which some journalists consider too invasive and impossible to implement.

Russians will go to the polls on Dec. 7 to renew the State Duma. The presidential election is slated for Mar. 14, 2004.
