Russians See Iraq War As “Crime”

March 24, 2004

(CPOD) Mar. 24, 2004 - Many Russian adults disagree with the coalition effort in the Persian Gulf, according to a poll by the All-Russia Center for the Study of Public Opinion. 62 per cent of respondents believe the military operation is a crime against the Iraqi people.

The coalition effort against the regime of Saddam Hussein was launched in March 2003. On Mar. 29, 2003, Russian president Vladimir Putin branded the operation as a "great political error." Putin ruled out the participation of Russian troops in the intervention without the consent of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

United States president George W. Bush recently ordered an independent investigation into intelligence failures before the war in Iraq. The announcement came after former chief weapons inspector David Kay concluded that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction.

Some Russians believe the intervention was necessary to remove Hussein. 23 per cent say the operation had the correct goal of overthrowing the dictatorial regime, but believe its methods are questionable. Only four per cent of respondents agree with the U.S. entirely.
