Russians Gauge Corruption

(CPOD) Jan. 15, 2004 - Many Russian citizens believe dishonest practices and bribes are still a daily occurrence, according to a poll by Russian Public Opinion & Market Research. 56 per cent of respondents say corruption is one of the biggest problems in the country.

President Vladimir Putin promised a crackdown on corruption. On Oct. 25, 2003, Mikhail Khodorkovsky --head of oil corporation YUKOS-- was arrested on tax evasion and fraud charges.

This past November, Putin authorized the establishment of an anti-corruption committee. 82 per cent of respondents think the country will not be able to eradicate dishonest practices in the foreseeable future.
