Russians Back Nuclear Test Moratorium

August 31, 2004

(CPOD) Aug. 31, 2004 - Many Russians want to maintain a ban on nuclear testing, according to a poll by Russian Public Opinion & Market Research. 81 per cent of respondents believe the present moratorium should be kept in place.

Nuclear tests in the Soviet Union began in 1949 in Semipalatinsk, located in Kazakhstan. Earlier this month, Tadatoshi Akiba—mayor of the Japanese city of Hiroshima—sent a letter to Russian president Vladimir Putin urging him to prevent any tests.

Russia ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 2000. In response to Akiba's correspondence, Putin's government issued a statement, saying that the country "since gaining sovereignty, has not conducted a single nuclear test."
