Russia Wants EU Membership

(CPOD) Jun. 25, 2003 - Russians support entry into the European Union (EU), according to a poll by the Public Opinion Foundation. 73 per cent of respondents say the federation should become a member of the continental organization.

President Vladimir Putin is spearheading an effort to join the World Trade Organization, and has recently signed accords to open Russia's oil industry to British investment.

Despite their opposition to the war in Iraq, Russians do not want their country to lose touch with the United States. 50 per cent of respondents favor a relationship with both the EU and the U.S.
