Ruling Smer Alone at the Top in Slovakia

January 31, 2008

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Slovakia’s governing party enjoys of a great deal of public support, according to a poll by UVVM. 43.9 per cent of respondents would vote for the Direction-Social Democracy (Smer) in the next legislative election, down 1.3 points since December.

The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU) is second with 14.7 per cent, followed by the Slovak National Party (SNS) with 14 per cent, the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 8.2 per cent, the Party of the Hungarian Coalition (SMK) with eight per cent, and the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) with 7.2 per cent.

Parties require at least six per cent of the vote to earn seats under the country’s proportional representation system. The Slovak Communist Party (KSS), the Movement for Democracy (HZD), the New Civic Alliance (ANO) and the Free Forum (SF) all fall below this threshold.

Slovak voters renewed their legislative branch in June 2006. Final results placed Smer—led by Robert Fico—as the top party in the European country with 50 seats. In July, Fico officially took over as prime minister, in a coalition encompassing Smer, the SNS and the HZDS.

On Jan. 17, Fico said Slovakia is ready to adopt the euro as planned in 2009, declaring, "We are already in position to meet (the economic criteria for adoption) and we’ll continue to meet them. You do not need to have any concerns about that."

The Slovak prime minister criticized the media for what he called a "negative campaign" against the single European currency, adding, "If we have to be afraid of something, it is the atmosphere that is being spread about the euro in Slovakia. (...) I have not heard anything positive about the euro in the Slovak media for a long time."
