Rodham Clinton Trails Giuliani, McCain in U.S.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton trails two prospective Republican presidential nominees in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 49 per cent of respondents would vote for former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in 2008, while 43 per cent would support the New York senator.
In a contest pitting Rodham Clinton against Arizona senator John McCain, the Republican holds a one-point advantage. In December, McCain held a four-point edge over the former first lady in a presidential trial.
On Jan. 31, U.S. president George W. Bush refused to discuss the 2008 process, saying, "One of the things that's going to be—that's going to happen here over the next year or so is, (reporters) are going to try to get me to become a political pundit. (...) I have got too much on my mind to worry about the politics in either primary."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
