(Angus Reid Global Scan) - Republican Party supporters in the United States have two favourites for the next presidential primary, according to a poll by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. 21 per cent of respondents would vote for current U.S. state secretary Condoleezza Rice, while 21 per cent would back former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Arizona senator John McCain is next on the list with 19 per cent, followed by Florida governor Jeb Bush with five per cent, former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich also with five per cent, and Virginia senator George Allen with four per cent.
Support is lower for Kansas senator Sam Brownback, Tennessee senator Bill Frist, New York governor George Pataki, Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel, Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, and Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
