Rhode Island Keeps Kerry On Top

(CPOD) Feb. 28, 2004 - Massachusetts senator John Kerry is the top Democrat in Rhode Island, according to a poll by Survey USA released by WLNE-TV. 66 per cent of respondents would support Kerry in the state's presidential primary.

North Carolina senator John Edwards is second with 23 per cent. Rhode Island, along with nine other states, will hold its Democratic contest on Mar. 2.

Kerry has won 18 of the 20 Democratic presidential primaries and caucuses held so far, making him the frontrunner for his party's nomination. Edwards won the South Carolina primary, and has emerged a Kerry's main challenger in the past few weeks.

Democrat Al Gore carried the state's four electoral votes in the 2000 election, with 61 per cent of the vote. No Republican has won Rhode Island since 1984, when Ronald Reagan carried every state except Minnesota, home state to then Democratic nominee Walter Mondale.

Kerry recently outlined his plans for foreign policy should he become president. The senator has called for a "name and shame" campaign against nations that finance terrorist activity.
