Republicans 2008: McCain 44%, Huckabee 30%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Two-in-five Republican Party supporters in the United States would like John McCain to become their presidential nominee this year, according to a poll by Ipsos-Public Affairs released by the Associated Press. 44 per cent of respondents would vote for the Arizona senator in a primary.
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is second with 30 per cent, followed by Texas congressman Ron Paul with nine per cent.
After the first 33 Republican presidential caucuses and primaries have been held, McCain has secured the support of 827 pledged delegates and unpledged members of the Republican National Committee (RNC), followed by Huckabee with 217, and Paul with 16.
Yesterday, Huckabee said McCain has not asked him to abandon the race, adding, "Our conversations are very cordial. And, by the way, I think it’s pretty noteworthy that the two most civil campaigns in the Republican primary are the ones still standing. We both have had mutual respect for one another."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
