Republicans 2008: McCain 34%, Huckabee 21%

Abstract: (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public backing for John McCain among Republican Party supporters in the United States increased this month, according to a poll by Opinion Research Corporation released by CNN. 34 per cent of respondents would support the Arizona senator for the party’s presidential nomination, up 21 points since December.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is second with 21 per cent, followed by former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani with 18 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 14 per cent, actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with six per cent, Texas congressman Ron Paul with five per cent, and California congressman Duncan Hunter with one per cent.

Yesterday, Giuliani’s campaign launched a television ad in Florida, which features an image of the ruins of the World Trade Center. In the spot, a voice declares: "When the world wavered, and history hesitated, he never did."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
