(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - John McCain is the top presidential contender for Republican Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by Gallup released by USA Today. 31 per cent of respondents would back the Arizona senator.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is second with 21 per cent, followed by former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee with 18 per cent, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani with 12 per cent, Texas congressman Ron Paul with one per cent, and former diplomat Alan Keyes with one per cent.

After the first six Republican presidential caucuses and primaries have been held, Romney has secured the support of 73 pledged delegates and unpledged members of the Republican National Committee (RNC), followed by McCain with 38, Huckabee with 29, Paul with six, and Giuliani with two.

On Jan. 28, Paul discussed his views on foreign policy, saying, "We’re in two countries right now and the threat of terrorism is higher—not lower—because of that. (...) We’ve been involved in wars we shouldn’t be involved in. We go around the world, we blow up these countries, we blow up their infrastructure. It costs us money to do that. Then we say we have a moral obligation to rebuild it. And so you get taxed again."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
