Republicans 2008: McCain 29%, Huckabee 23%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - John McCain is the most popular presidential hopeful for Republican Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by Zogby International released by Reuters. 29 per cent of respondents would vote for the Arizona senator in a primary.
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is second with 23 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 14 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 13 per cent, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani with nine per cent, and Texas congressman Ron Paul with four per cent.
On Jan. 19, after finishing second in the South Carolina primary, Huckabee declared: "We’re not going to sit around and second guess. (...) I would rather be where I am and have done it with honour than have won with the dishonour of getting there by attacking somebody else. (...) The path to the White House is not ending here tonight."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
