Republicans 2008: McCain 28%, Huckabee 20%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for John McCain has increased among Republican Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by TNS released by the Washington Post and ABC News. 28 per cent of respondents would vote for the Arizona senator in a presidential primary, up 16 points since December.
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is second with 20 per cent, followed by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 19 per cent, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani with 15 per cent, actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with eight per cent, Texas congressman Ron Paul with three per cent, and California congressman Duncan Hunter with two per cent.
On Jan. 15, Giuliani discussed his proposed fiscal policies, saying, "The corporate tax cut will definitely result in increased revenue, because the trick to being a strategic tax cutter is to pick on the taxes that are the most anti-competitive and reduce those first. And the corporate tax is one of the most anti-competitive in the world."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
