(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani is holding on to the national lead in the race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Gallup released by USA Today. 30 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is second with 20 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 16 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent, and former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with seven per cent.

Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, California congressman Duncan Hunter, and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson.

Yesterday, Giuliani discussed his views on the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that established a constitutional right to abortion in the U.S., saying, "Roe v. Wade is not a litmus test. No particular case is a litmus test. That's not the way to appoint Supreme Court justices or any judge. (...) It would be OK to repeal (Roe v. Wade). It would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as precedent."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
