Republicans 2008: Giuliani at 27%, McCain 19%

May 07, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for Rudy Giuliani's presidential bid fell in the United States, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. 27 per cent of Republican Party supporters would vote for the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary, down 13 points since February.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 19 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 14 per cent, former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with eight per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney also with eight per cent.

Support is lower for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, California congressman Duncan Hunter, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, and former New York governor George Pataki.

On May 3, ten Republican presidential hopefuls participated in a debate held at the Ronald Reagan presidential library in California. Giuliani discussed his views on the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision—which legalized abortion in the U.S.—saying, "It would be OK to repeal. It would be OK also if a strict constructionist judge viewed it as precedent, and I think a judge has to make that decision. (...) I think the court has to make that decision and then the country can deal with it. We're a federalist system of government and states can make their own decisions."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
