(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - In a four-person race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the United States, public support for Rudy Giuliani has increased, according to a poll by CBS News. 38 per cent of respondents would like to see the former New York City mayor as their candidate, up five points since July.

Actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is second with 18 per cent, followed by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 13 per cent, and Arizona senator John McCain with 12 per cent.

On Aug. 15, McCain discussed the negative effect of his support for a comprehensive immigration bill, saying, "I have never seen an issue that has inflamed the passions of the American people the way the issue of immigration reform has—ever—including Iraq. I have never heard such rhetoric. We have never received death threats before like I received."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
