Republicans 2008: Giuliani 33%, McCain at 19%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani is holding on to the top spot among the Republican Party’s presidential hopefuls in the United States, according to a poll by TNS released by the Washington Post and ABC News. 33 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 19 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 16 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 11 per cent, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee with nine per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul, California congressman Duncan Hunter, and Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo.
On Nov. 1, Hunter outlined a proposal to deal with diplomats who have refused to take assignments in Iraq, saying, "When the State Department appears to be filled with reluctant personnel, let’s turn to those who have bravely followed the American flag in the most dangerous of assignments. The U.S. Marines, soldiers, airmen and Navy personnel presently recovering at our national military hospitals have all the character required by the Department of State. They are brave, loyal, intelligent and fiercely determined to win the War on Terror."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
