Republicans 2008: Giuliani 29%, Thompson at 19%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani remains the most popular presidential contender for Republican Party supporters in the United States, according to a poll by Ipsos-Public Affairs released by the Associated Press. 29 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a 2008 presidential primary.
Actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is second with 19 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 13 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 12 per cent, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee with 10 per cent.
On Nov. 8, Giuliani discussed his views on the war on terrorism, saying, "(Some of us) believe that we have to remain a country that has the Patriot Act, a country that has electronic surveillance to use to find out about these plots that may be being planned, a country that does use, not torture—America should never use torture—but we have to use aggressive questioning to get information from people."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
