Republicans 2008: Giuliani 29%, McCain 17%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More Republican Party supporters in the United States want Rudy Giuliani as their presidential nominee in 2008, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 29 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a primary, up seven points since early June.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 17 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 15 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent, and former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich also with eight per cent. Support is lower for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel, California congressman Duncan Hunter and Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo.
On Jul. 1, Tancredo criticized Giuliani, saying, "He's now happy as a clam with the idea of securing our borders and going after immigration. It's great. It's wonderful. I don't believe a word of it." Giuliani spokesman Jarrod Agen said Tancredo's statement is "completely inaccurate," adding, "Giuliani has made it clear that he is against amnesty and that one of his full commitments is to end illegal immigration in the United States."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
