Republicans 2008: Giuliani 26%, Huckabee 23%

Abstract: (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani is holding on to the top spot in the national race for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by YouGov/Polimetrix released by The Economist. 26 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani is holding on to the top spot in the national race for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by YouGov/Polimetrix released by The Economist. 26 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is second with 23 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 13 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 11 per cent, and Arizona senator John McCain also with 10 per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul and California congressman Duncan Hunter.

On Dec. 12 during a televised debate, Romney discussed his priorities, saying, "First of all, I want to establish a strategy to help us overwhelm global jihad and keep the world safe. I want to end illegal immigration. We can get that done. (...) I want to end the extraordinary growth in federal spending. And I want to keep our tax burden down and reduce our tax burden on middle-income families."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
