Republicans 2008: Giuliani 26%, Huckabee 18%

Abstract: (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani remains the most popular Republican Party presidential hopeful in the United States, according to a poll by Ipsos-Public Affairs released by the Associated Press. 26 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary, down three points since November.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Rudy Giuliani remains the most popular Republican Party presidential hopeful in the United States, according to a poll by Ipsos-Public Affairs released by the Associated Press. 26 per cent of respondents would back the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary, down three points since November.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is second with 18 per cent—up eight points in a month—followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 13 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 12 per cent, and actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 11 per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul.

On Dec. 6, Romney—a Mormon—referred to his religion, saying, "I will put no doctrine of any church above the plain duties of the office and the sovereign authority of the law. (...) A president must serve only the common cause of the people of the United States."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
