Republicans 2008: Giuliani 23%, Huckabee 17%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for Rudy Giuliani fell among Republican Party backers in the United States, according to a poll by Bloomberg and the Los Angeles Times. 23 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a presidential primary, down nine points since October.
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is second with 17 per cent—up 10 points in two months—followed by former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 14 per cent, Arizona senator John McCain with 11 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with nine per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul, and California congressman Duncan Hunter.
On Dec. 4, McCain discussed his views on health care, saying, "The Democrats want to raise your taxes, and they want a government mandate system. I’m not going to mandate that every American have health insurance. I’m not going to mandate that every American have a home. I’m not going mandate that every American have a college education. But I’m going to make them all affordable and available."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
