Republicans 2008: Giuliani 22%, McCain 15%
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Public support for Rudy Giuliani fell again in the race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 22 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a primary, down two points since May.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 15 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 13 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 10 per cent, and former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with eight per cent.
Support is lower for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Texas congressman Ron Paul, former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel, California congressman Duncan Hunter, and Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo.
Yesterday, Tancredo expressed satisfaction with the U.S. Senate's apparent rejection of the proposed immigration bill, saying, "This is a testament to the will of the American people and a great victory for our country. It's time to move forward with what we should have been doing when this bill was originally passed is 1986, and consistently enforce the laws."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
