Republicans 2008: Giuliani 20%, Tie for Second

December 24, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - There is no clear frontrunner in the national race for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 20 per cent of respondents would vote for former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in a 2008 primary.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and Arizona senator John McCain are tied for second with 19 per cent, followed by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 11 per cent, and actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 10 per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul, California congressman Duncan Hunter, and Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo.

On Dec. 20, Romney welcomed the endorsement of Tancredo—who decided to withdraw from the presidential race—saying, "Congressman Tancredo ran a spirited campaign focused on issues that are important to many Americans. I thank him for his support. While we don’t agree on every issue, we agree on the need to keep America strong. I look forward to working with him and other Republicans to achieve that end."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
