(ARGM) - Rudy Giuliani remains the most popular presidential hopeful for Republican Party sympathizers in the United States, according to a poll by Hart/McInturff released by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News. 34 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 29 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 10 per cent, and Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent. Support is lower for Kansas senator Sam Brownback, Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, New York governor George Pataki, and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson.

On Dec. 16, McCain discussed the current situation in Afghanistan, saying, "The focus here is more on training the Afghan National Army and the police, as opposed to the increased U.S. troop presence. (Pakistan and Afghanistan) are fighting a common enemy. The level of rhetoric needs to be lowered and the level of cooperation needs to be dramatically increased."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
