Putin Rides High In Russia
(CPOD) Nov. 18, 2003 - The high standing of Vladimir Putin among his countrymen continues, according to a poll by the Russian Center for Public Opinion and Market Research. 80 per cent of respondents approve of the president's performance, a seven per cent increase since October.
Putin's government has swayed views after a crackdown on corruption. On Oct. 25, Mikhail Khodorkovsky --head of oil corporation YUKOS-- was arrested on tax evasion and fraud charges.
Last week, Putin held a meeting with Russian business leaders to ease tension over Khodorkovsky's arrest, and promised a closer engagement with the country's private sector.
Russians will go to the polls on Dec. 7 to renew the State Duma. The presidential election is slated for Mar. 14, 2004.
